BATTERIES (household)

The problem

  • nickel, mercury are toxix, leech into water/soil.  Very bad. So bad that during my med school toxicology class the lecturer, after asking for a show of hands asking how many people use regular batteries, replied by saying "Shame on you. Shame on all of you."

Reduce

  • rechargable batteries.  You can get a charger at any store like Home Depot, but before you get a little charger for a few AA's and then next year decide you want for C's and D's, check out one that does it all: Maha. Best one I've seen. Of course, this depends on your usage. Like compact fluorescent lights, the up front cost may seem a bit high, but it usually pays for itself (depending on usage).

Reuse

  • rechargable batteries  "  "  "...

Recycle

  •  if you have regular batteries, or your rechargeable ones have died (usually after 1,000 uses!), keep them in a shoebox or something, and then once a year take them for proper disposal. See County/City rules (sidebar).
