PURPOSE / USE OF THIS WIKI:
Worn out tennis shoes? Iron not working? Refrigerator died? Almost everything you can think of has a better place to go then to your curb, into a truck, and then sitting in a landfill for close to eternity. This wiki will hopefully serve as a central place for people to share their ideas about what to do with all the "stuff" they want to get rid of. Most people are glad to help save the planet...if it's easy. This wiki should make it a little easier. Just use the alphebetical index above to find the item you want to recycle or better yet, ADD to the wiki with some of your own insights and discoveries. You think you've thought of everything? The night before you're about to dump something on the curb, just check this website in case someone else has thought of another solution...
Does your area recycle only "type 1" and "type 2" plastics? All those 3,4,5,6, & 7 type plastics can be recycled too, but probably require a shlep to a recycling center. We can hopefully set up a spot on this wiki where people can coordinate making such trips. That way, you can keep those items in a seperate bin and when it fills up you can check here and see if anyone in your zipcode is planning on making a recycling center run. Likewise for batteries, elctronics, etc. (Or you could just use this wiki to learn the simple fact that Baltimore City collects all those types of plastic even though the County doesn't!)
HOW TO CONTRIBUTE
If you're computer savvy, just stick to the format you see and try not to do too much creative formatting. Try to be succinct; no more than a line or two for any point. Give good references. Any questions or suggestions, just contact me. (1) Click on the letter above for the item you want to comment on. (2) Click on "Edit page". At the prompt, PASSWORD: recycle USERNAME/EMAIL: (you pick) (3) Use the template for an entry (copy/paste and then delete what you don't want).
EXAMPLE:

ITEM
The problem
- ITEM's are toxic. It is estmated that every American discards over 500 ITEMS annually.
Reduce
- Try using a ___ instead of an ITEM.
Reuse
- Here's a good website on what to do with your ITEMS: http://....
Recycle
- ITEMS can be dropped off at the Catonsville...
- check out this website (http://....) for how to mail your ITEM in.
GENERAL PRINCIPLES:
1. REDUCE
- don't buy it to begin with
- don't get items marketed as "disposable", or at least don't dispose of them until they've truly gone bad
2. REUSE
- use it again for same purpose
- find a new use for it
- make something out of it
- sell it
- give it away to someone who can use it
3. RECYCLE
- determine if it can be recycled at curbside or if it needs more "specialty" recycling
